What does not count, and why. Published because the omission is where a check quietly becomes a claim.

  • "freshly ground" or "ground to order"
    A statement about when grinding happens is not a statement that a ground item is purchasable here, and some sellers use the phrase to describe what the buyer should do at home.
  • "grind options available" in prose
    This announces that grinding exists as a service without making any ground item selectable, so a buyer cannot act on it at the point of purchase.
  • a brew-method option name such as Espresso or Filter, treated as the generic ground state
    A named brew grind is a different, narrower assertion covered by its own entry, and a store may offer brew-specific grinds while offering no general ground option.
  • the presence of a grind option list without any option being purchasable
    An option offered but permanently out of stock is not a format the buyer can receive, which the engine reports separately as listed and unavailable.

Conflict rules

What a pass licenses

A pass does NOT establish: That the coffee is ground fresh, ground at dispatch, ground to any particular size, or that ground is the state a buyer receives by default.

Predicted before this standard had ever run: 35-70% — the real rate is higher, so the entry discriminates less than predicted.

Specialty roasters who sell primarily whole bean often expose no general ground option, listing only brew-specific grinds or none at all, while mainstream sellers list ground as a first-class option. The split is genuinely unknown and the band is wide to say so.

Known gaps

For a shopper

If you have no grinder, this is the question that decides whether the bag is usable to you. Check whether a ground option is actually selectable rather than whether the page mentions grinding, because many roasters describe a grinding service they do not offer as a purchasable option.

For a merchant

Add a purchasable option value using the word "Ground" for the general pre-ground item, separately from any brew-specific grind names, and keep the variant in stock rather than describing the service in prose only.
