Explicitly insufficient evidence

What does not count, and why. Published because the omission is where a check quietly becomes a claim.

  • a rest figure attributed to a trade organisation's published standards
    The only trade-anchored rest figure that exists is a cupping sample-preparation requirement for assessment within a day of roasting, and transplanting it to a shopper's brewing advice inverts its meaning. This is the near-miss most likely to be dressed in authority.
  • a rest window with no roast date to anchor it
    A window measured from an unstated roast day is unactionable, and it is the commonest shape.
  • "let rest a few days" or "allow to degas"
    No units, so nothing can be acted on or checked.
  • any single number presented as the industry standard
    Published sources span three to thirty days and disagree openly, and the best-designed study located contradicts the professional norm it tested.
  • a rest claim inferred from the presence of a valve
    A valve manages gas escape and bounds nothing about the coffee's age or readiness.

Few pages state a window with units and an anchor, and no external definition exists to check the number against, so this is published as advisory rather than as something to run. Degassing is a real measurable physical process; the consumer window is not a settled quantity.

For a shopper

Freshly roasted beans release gas for days and can taste better after a rest, but the trade genuinely disagrees about how long, with published advice spanning three to thirty days. Any single number offered as the industry standard is overstating a real disagreement.

For a merchant

State your own recommended window with units, anchored to the roast date, and present it as your recommendation rather than as a settled figure.
